Halo is a prequel to an old game the developers at Bungie made a long time ago called MARATHON
It involves a cyborg man (master chief) crash landing on a planet after hundreds of years with no memory of his past.
It had similar enemy design to Halo and had very wolfenstein/doom graphics.
Thats what that planet MasterChief's little ship was heading towards at the end.
I assume, Bungie will remake Marathon for the Xbox720 or 1250 or whatever the hell number we'll be on by that point.
as for worst video game ending, I am going for Smash Bros 64.
You're beat the master hand, you shoot some credits, and suddenly at a volume MUCH higher than the rest of the game a LOUD HOOOOORRRIBLE voice HOLLERS at a million decibels

The ending of Metal Gear Solid 4 was pretty good until, just when you think that long cut scene is finally gonna end,
