So I had this idea.
" />
I'm a total sucker for those "Choose Your Own Adventure" games, the ones where you have multiple options and each option leads you to a new outcome with more options, until you get to one of the many endings.
SO, I thought we could start it off with like 4 simple options. Anyone who wants to, can build off of part of the game from the beginning and make their own original section with some possible endings. Each section would go into a separate scene, to avoid confusion. Not only would this be able to draw attention to individual artists, but we can also put a giant Camp North stamp on top of it to bring attention to this site. And aside from that stuff, even if we only have a couple people contribute, we'll still have a pretty healthy game because of all the alternative pathways and endings.
I thought it'd be awesome just to see the final production, a whole collaboration with tons of different styles and humors and oddity stories, that might just dip into the face of CN.
So, I'd like to see who'd be interested in contributing. Also, like, we'd have to figure out some things: like if we'll use multiple options or a point-and-click style game (I prefer multiple options because point-and-click is somewhat limited), if the game will start off in a "camp" environment, if there will be a main character that will used throughout the game, ect.
:O

I am in love with this idea. In fact, I have tried to emulate something similar every year since 2002 but have failed so one day I just did a "written" one and it was hella fun. I am all for contributing to this but as far as art/animation goes, I can't do none of that, just writing. I can make up for what I don't do in art/animation with my writing; or at least I'll try.

This would be awesomely awesome. Times 2. I'm in.

Awesome. I'll try and start to put something together to give you guys something to work off of.

I would be more than happy to put it together for you, I love your writings.
Or someone else could, whatever works.

Well, let me know what gets decided Austin so I can contribute ASAP.

OKAY EVERYWUN, I MADE A SUPER POST THANG:

Here is something I quickly put together, to give a general idea: (The button wasn't
working for me, but Theo said they worked fine for him.)
http://spamtheweb.com/ul/upload/070808/61733_campnorthadventure.php
^ As you can see, I put the option buttons at the bottom, along with the description of the
event. I also gave a couple examples of how you can do it (which would be hand drawn
buttons, and typeface written buttons with numbers).
You can include animation or you don't have to. Whatever works for you.
:8
Here's some specs we can go by:
Canvas Size --> 550x400 pixels (Default).
Frames Per Second --> 24
Background --> White.

Where to start it off? You could make it start off practically anywhere, but try not too make it too out of no where on your first event. Your first event must somehow tie in with the beginning portion of the game.
:|
Here's what I'll be putting together for the beginning portion:
"Gibbons arrive at camp."
1. Take a walk in the woods.
2. Sit by the campfire.
3. Explore the campsite.
4. Walk to the lake.
.
Very simple, very ordinary beginning options. Say Joey wanted his part to be like this:
Once the player goes into the Campsite, the option to play Joey's section of the game would be to enter the cafeteria. He could build a whole game starting off with the player entering the cafeteria. Maybe he then could choose to eat food which would go on to give him sickness, forcing him to search for an antidote, or he could find a bully there and try and fight him.
Build up the game, blah blah blah, and then when Joey sends me the .fla, he'll include that the beginning event of his game would be to "Enter the Cafeteria."
So in the section of MY beginning portion, I would make a button that would let the character "Enter the Cafeteria" once they have already walked into the Campsite.
Make sense?

THE CHARACTER:
His name is Gibbons. (lol.)
Here's a picture that Theo drew of him:

We wanted him to be superduperreally simple, with nothing too distinctive about him, so
.
that you guys can elaborate on him however you please.
If you don't want to draw him, then don't. Just make it in first person view, or somethin'. This is your game too, so like, whatever maan.
Try not to make the game seem "unfair" by having totally unpredictable deaths- but on the
other hand, that's sometimes partically the fun of it. (Sometimes, eh.)
Don't worry about anything being too weird or quirky or out there. Remember what site you're representing.
IMPORTANTNESS --> Please put backgrounds on your buttons, to make them easier to click. You can do this by make a frame on the "HIT" frame of your button have a box that covers the area that the player can click, or by making a box/circle with 0% alpha on a seperate layer. If you don't do this, I'll have to do it for you, which will make me very sad.

Let's all make it in third person, so no first person funny business.
We don't care how many you make.
And if you're one of those people who wants to write their little adventures, but doesn't want to draw/animate them, it's cool. Write it out on this thread, perhaps in Choose Your Own Adventure form with numbers(?) and I, or something else, will place it together. GIVE US YOUR TALENTS!
HEY. If you guis need ANYTHING at all, drop me an IM on AIM or MSN:
aim: trippingmetal
msn: trippingmetal@gmail.com
(Or just uh, like- uh. PM me here on CN, or post on the thread.)
That includes any sorts of confusion. I lead a life of despair and tragic lonliness, so
you'll never be bothering me.

Make sure to keep us updated on this thread. Just like, post what you got so far, every so often.
LET'S GET TA ROLLIN'.

Nice post Austin, now I have a much better idea of what the hell is going on.
I'm beginning my own little side-story for this project, but it's already becoming larger than I imagined.
August 07, 2008 | 11:52:21 pm
I'm interested in this, looks like lots of fun! Not sure I know how it works 100% though, maybe I'm just thick.
Let's say my part of the game spawns off from the beginning option of 'going to the cafeteria' - do I pick the beginning option or do I suggest it to you and you add that into the first sequence?
August 08, 2008 | 2:27:23 pm
Shi...I can't do actionscript.
Helps?

You'd suggest it to me, and I'd add it to the first sequence. By doing so includes your section of the game.

Sure dude. If you want to drop me an IM I can explain it much better than on here. But if a lot of people need help, then I'll post something to explain all the little details.

BY THE WAY, don't forget to rename your symbols!
August 08, 2008 | 5:57:42 pm
Thanks for the help Austin, I'll try to get something interesting.
August 09, 2008 | 11:07:08 am
I'd suggest naming your symbols like yourname_etc, like if I did one it would be nathanielmilburn_player or something like that so you guys don't run into symbols with the same name.
August 09, 2008 | 11:14:02 am
Austin? What'd I do? Just write something and post it? Or send it to you?

{ mikekleine: Austin? What'd I do? Just write something and post it? Or send it to you? }
You can PM it to me, if you want. Or if you'd rather you can just post it here.
BTW: When you guy's have death events in your game, or basically Endings, you can put a fancy REPLAY button on it and just have the button go to first frame of "Scene 1" in the .fla.
*One second, a bug with posted code is being fixed, hold up.*
This should make it replay fine on your game, and whenever I need to put it in the final .fla, it should replay to the beginning there, as well.

Austin is it okay if my beginning statement thing is "go for a walk in the woods", or something similar?
Anyway here's my design for the gibb-meister;

@ Christy: Yeah, of course. And that drawing looks sick!
